About Shine

Shine is a Christian homeschool community in which parents cooperate together to provide enriching academic classes and extracurricular opportunities to homeschooling students.

Shine provides an opportunity for home-educated children to develop accountability and academic enrichment, as well as experience healthy competition, teamwork, and the challenges of interpersonal relationships in a semi- “traditional” school environment.  All the classes at Shine are designed to provide group learning opportunities in a fun and hands on, yet structured, academic environment.

We currently serve students grades K-8th, with plans to open to older students in coming semesters.

Academic Classes

Our Academic classes are offered on Tuesday mornings from 8:45-12:15 through the school year. These hands-on, engaging classes are taught by parent volunteers and  include history, science, art, and worldview. One parent/guardian per family is required to stay and volunteer during our Tuesday morning classes.

Elective Classes

Elective courses are offered on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:00-4:45. These classes are extra-curricular in nature and are are taught by paid teachers who are professionals in their fields. Current electives include drama, robotics, jiu jitsu, gymnastics, cotillion, p.e., latin, spanish, and book club. Electives are selected based on interest and teacher availability, and may vary each semester. Parents are welcome, but not required to stay for our elective classes

Field Trips And Special Events

We partake in many field trips and special events throughout the school year. Field trips participation open to registered Shine students. Participation is optional.

Field trips normally complement the academic content being covered in our Tuesday morning classes. Some upcoming field trips include: Tulsa and OKC botanic gardens, The Gathering Place, The OKC Art Museum, The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, Cornerstone Kids Ranch, local flower and chicken farms, Institute of Creation Research, Sam Noble Museum, and Science Museum OKlahoma.

We also host a variety of special events for our group. Past special events have included a talent show, academic trivia bowl, art gallery, history wax museum, science fair, cotillion ball, and theater performances.

Student Involvement

Shine is a 12 week commitment. Enrollment renews each semester. Students who enroll  in our Tuesday morning academic classes must participate in all four classes. Consistent attendance is vital for the co-op to run efficiently. One absence counts for a twelve percent loss in class instruction.

Students are strongly encouraged to complete any homework assignments or activities in order to glean the most from their classes.

Parental Involvement

Shine is a homeschool cooperative, which means parents cooperate together to teach our students. Every Shine parent contributes their own unique skill set, experiences,  talents, and abilities by teaching and assisting in our core classes. As a result of this investment of time, creativity, and effort by the parents, our children have access to a bounteous variety of learning opportunities each semester. One parent per family stays on campus for the duration of our Tuesday morning classes and serves in either a teaching or assisting role.
